Two Chinese officials at the Viceroy's table, Mr. Chow, the Director of the Northern Railway, and Mr. Liang, the Customs' Taotai, who had themselves been educated in America, spoke in warm praise of Western education, had each a son at Rugby, and stated that in selecting England for this purpose, they had in view oot merely educational advantages, but the opportunity for the formation of character afforded by an English public school education.

The Viceroy talked much of his early days in Corea, and showed a marvellously retentive memory of even unimportant events of that time.
